Beautiful Shades of Brown, The Art of Laura Wheeler Waring
Released Feb. 4, 2020, this book tells the story of young Laura Wheeler Waring and her passionate journey of artistic self-discovery. Growing up in the late 19th century, Waring had never encountered an artist who looked like her, nor did she see any paintings of people who looked like her. After studying art in Paris, Waring was commissioned by the Harmon Foundation in Philadelphia to paint portraits of accomplished African-Americans/ Her portraits still hang in Washington D.C.'s National Portrait Gallery, where children of all races can admire the beautiful shades of brown she captured.
